Injury to the Lateral Collateral Ligament usually results from a direct blow to the inner knee toward the outside or during a sharp pivot. With an injury to the LCL, there is local discomfort along the lateral knee.

In post-physical therapy the athlete will work on quadriceps-strengthening and balancing exercises to help reduce stress and strain on the knee.

Recovery can take up to three months. Return to play depends on range of motion and strength. Athletes should progress slowly and be able to perform movements that mimic their sport before attempting full participation.

Osgood-Schlatter’s syndrome is characterized by well localized tenderness of the tibial tuberosity (the bump on the leg just below the knee cap). Symptoms affect growing children and can be caused by running and jumping.

Virtually all cases of Osgood-Schlatter’s syndrome can be treated nonoperatively and once the growth plate closes symptoms subside. Options for treatment include cessation of the related activity, local treatment with ice massage and stretching , and strengthening exercises.

Players returning to his or her sport is dictated by the ability to perform their sport. Often they return tosport with mild recurrent symptoms. Again, this condition resolves itself once the growth plate in the maturing athlete closes.
